Direct Investments and Debt Financing in East Africa 

Swedish – East Africa Chamber of Commerce (SWEACC) is a membership organisation for companies and investors operating in East-Africa. Through the SWEACC Cluster for Investments and Financing the scope will be open to work on the African continent. The Cluster aims to be the most experienced group of institutions and individuals, with unique information and contacts to find and evaluate investments opportunities in Africa. 

Meet SWEACC´s Cluster Investments & Financing 

SWEACC Investment & Financing Cluster Team are hosting a cluster meeting over lunch which focusses on significant industry and sector developments. We will discuss current investment opportunities as well as how we can further improve the investment climate in East Africa. This session will explore the following areas through a range of speakers and a panel process:

  • Off-GRID solutions for East African businesses

  • Debt financing of SME's in East Africa

  • Panel discussion with ambassadors and embassy representatives

Presentation of Speakers

Mr. John Small is the CEO of Eastern Africa Association (EAA) 
He was resident for several years in Kenya as the CEO of an international company and have long experience of doing business in the region. The EAA was established over 50 years ago and is registered in the UK and have a fully staffed office in Nairobi. 

EAA has its focus is on foreign investors doing business in East Africa, which primarily covers Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Rwanda and Ethiopia. EAA has more than 400 investors from more than 25 different countries as members, representing all major sectors of business investment, in agriculture, industry, commerce, IT and financial services. 

Mr. Stefan Issler is head of direct investments in energy debt at responsibility Investment AG, including renewable energy, energy efficiency and energy access. He has extensive investment experience from East Africa, spending more than 4 years stationed at responsAbility’s Nairobi office, first as senior investment officer, later also as deputy station chief. 

responsAbility is an asset manager in the field of development investments and offers professionally-managed investment solutions to private, institutional and public investors. The company’s investment solutions supply debt and equity financing predominantly to non-listed firms in emerging and developing economies. 

Dr. Pontus Engström is the CEO of MTI Investment AS (MTI) 

He has 15 years of portfolio investment and consulting experience from firms such as Credit Swiss, DnB, and Boston Consulting Group. He has research experience in financing of entrepreneurship and human resource management. 

MTI pursue investment in firms that have potential for scale economy and development of a strong market position through brand names and distribution capacity. MTI is seeking firms that can potentially be national market leaders in its area. This imply that MTI will specifically seek to invest in food distribution and processing (e.g., dairy), various scalable services (e.g., engineering, retail, waste management, fish farming etc.) and production for a scalable local market (e.g., property development)

The event is by invitation only and free of charge, primarily reaching out to members of SWEACC, NABA and EAA with ongoing or planned financial activities in Africa. For non-members event fee is 450 kr but we practice free admittance to first time guests. Please note that if you as member or non-member register and don’t attend or cancel later than 24 hours before the event we reserve the right to debit 450 sek + VAT (moms).
